Louis Armstrong

Louis Daniel Armstrong was born on 4th August in 1901 in New Orleans.

It's pretty curious how some musicians find to their in instruments. Armstrong's career started with the end of his career in school when he was eleven. He visited school only temporally, so left it to help his mother to survive.

When Armstrongs got into touch with the law, he was brought to a "Coloured Waifs Home". There he learned to play cornet.

Finally he was back in the streets of New Orleans. He loved Jazz, which you could here everywhere in the streets of New Orleans.

King Oliver, who also was a very famous jazz-musician, gave Armstrong the first lessons on the trumpet. Later they played together in a band.

Louis Armstrong had his debut in a band of Kid Ory in New Orleans. In 1922 he became a member of the "Creole Jazz Band", in which King Oliver also played. In 1925 Armstrong founded his first own band in Chicago. In the same year he made his first records with the legendary "Hot Five". Later Armstrong became very famous, because of his virtuous and rousing singing. From times to times he played as a soloist in the most famous bands of his time. He accompanied such famous blues-singers, like Ella Fitzgerald and Bessie Smith. He also made tours around the world.

His legendary All-Stars were: Earl Hines (Piano), Barney Bigard (Clarinet), Jack Teagarden (Trombone) and of course him as singer and with the trumpet.

Louis Armstrong also invented the scat. Due to this invention he got the nickname "Satchmo".

Overall he made over 1 500 Records, the most famous ones are: "Ain't Misbehavin'", "I can't give you anything but love" and "Hello Dolly".

Louis Daniel Armstrong died the 6th July 1971.
